The chapter starts out with Kanamori leaving the stall Marie is in after she has been raped by him. The beginning focuses on inner monologue from both Marie and Kanamori's standpoints. Marie says that, at first, Kanamori assisted her by helping her with her bully problem. But as time went on, he began to demand sexual favors from her. She says that she understands that Kanamori did a good thing by protecting her from her bullies, but that her gratitude has been forgotten because Kanamori assaulted her so many times.
Then we switch to Kanamori's point of view. He talks about how he was once a pure teacher but that the stress of teaching got to him. So in order to alleviate his own stress he began assaulting Marie. He shows no remorse over his actions. Instead, he worries over Marie going to the police and ratting him out. But, in the end, he decides that Marie does not have the guts to do so.
Later, it is found out that Marie has been heard crying in the bathroom. Because of this, a ghost story around her is created, the story of Misomiso-san. This story says that if you go outside a certain stall of the woman's bathroom, you can hear a girl crying. She will ask you to "please, listen to her pityful tale." Kanamori is delighted by this, believing he can now assault Marie more easily because no one will come to the bathroom at night.
Higanbana and Marie then meet for the first time. Higanbana tells Marie of the mysteries of the school and that she is now one of them, the eighth mystery, Misomiso-san.
Marie and Kanamori meet in that stall once again. Marie shows determination in her face, something that scares Kanamori. She demands that her abuse must come to an end. Kanamori panics, asking her if she has gone to the police yet. Marie says she has not and will not as long as Kanamori stops demanding sexual favors from her. Kanamori realizes that the only way to keep Marie quiet is to kill her. As he describes it, the 'look in her eyes' have changed. So Kanamori strangles her.
After she has died, someone comes into the bathroom. Kanamori realizes he seriously misjudged the ghost story because obviously, if there's a ghost story, certain students are going to want to test out their bravery. Kanamori realizes the only way he can dump Marie's body is to pretend to be Misomiso-san. Therefore, Kanamori cries out, and says "Please listen to my pitiful story." The other person on the other side of the stall gets scared and runs away. Kanamori takes this chance to dump the body. Afterwards, he is elated, saying that he has surpassed humans and become Misomiso-san.
Higanbana visits the now dead Marie to tell her that there are now two candidates for the title of Misomiso-san. Marie responds by crying, wondering why Kanamori insists on torturing her even after her death. Higanbana says that not all hope is lost, saying that Marie can still beat Kanamori and take the title of Misomiso-san. Higanbana also says that if Marie loses, she'll eat her soul.
The next day, Kanamori gets a strange scratch on his arm (hinted to be caused by Higanbana.) He visits the school nurse to have his arm looked at. In the nurse's office, it is revealed that Higanbana is the doll that resides in the office. The nurse says that the doll kills people at night, and is one of the mysteries of the school. Upon looking closer at the doll, he realizes that she has a button missing on her sleeve. This causes him to remember the night that he dumped her body; Marie was missing a button as well. Kanamori explains that if the button is found, he's done for because Marie is a careful girl who would never walk around with even a single button missing.
So, that night, Kanamori returns to the murder scene to retrieve the button. He looks everywhere, not being able to find it at first, but then realizes that there's a blind spot behind the door, which is currently open. He panics, remembering that the tale of Misomiso-san requires for the stall door to be closed. Shrugging off the ghost story, he closes the door and finds the button on the toilet paper.
Then, all of a sudden, he hears Marie crying on the other side of the door. Kanamori hesitates, but then swings the door open. There Marie stands. Kanamori reaches out and strangles Marie once again.
Higanbana appears once again, saying that she's ready to announce a winner. She declares that Marie is the winner, and that she is now Misomiso-san. When Kanamori questions this decision, Higanbana says it's simple. Kanamori broke the rules of Misomiso-san which say that Misomiso-san is supposed to act in a pathetic manner. Kanamori is then killed.
